Frequently Asked Questions
About the different codes
A 1D-barcode (one-dimensional) consists of vertical lines of varying widths and contains information in one direction only, namely horizontally. This barcode can store a limited amount of data, usually around 20-25 characters, and is often used for product identification, such as in supermarkets. A 1D barcode can easily be scanned using a laser or CCD scanner.
A 2D-barcode (two-dimensional) has a more complex structure, storing data both horizontally and vertically. This allows it to contain much more information, such as thousands of characters, and even full URLs or contact details. Examples of 2D barcodes include the QR code and Datamatrix, which can be read using a camera or 2D scanner.
The QR code offers several advantages for both the producer and the consumer. The GS1 QR code not only contains the GTIN, as with traditional barcodes, but can also store additional information such as expiration dates, serial numbers, batch numbers, and multiple web addresses.
This makes the QR code a powerful tool for detailed product information, traceability, and marketing. Read more here about the various benefits.
EAN (European Article Number) is a type of barcode system mainly used in Europe, and includes formats like EAN-8 and EAN-13 for product identification.
GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) is an umbrella term that covers various systems of product identification numbers, including EAN and UPC (Universal Product Code). GTIN includes formats such as GTIN-8, GTIN-12, GTIN-13, and GTIN-14, and is used globally to identify trade items.
EAN is a specific variant of GTIN, but GTIN is the broader term that encompasses all types of product identification numbers.
From 2027, store checkouts will scan QR codes. Until then, it remains necessary to have the EAN-13 barcode on the product to ensure it can be processed at checkout.
The QR code must be within a 50 mm radius of the center of the EAN-13 code to ensure the product is only scanned once. Scanning systems will be adjusted accordingly.
